..of the new MT700D series using AGCO/Sisu engines, and consequently now having no CAT branding? Knowing that brand seems to count for a lot, I thought I'd put this question up. Do you think it will mean much to the CAT dealers who sell Challenger? Or the customers who still regard their Challengers as CAT machines?

I know my neighbor isn't concerned with the transition from CAT to Sisu, and he's been a long-time fan of the tracked tractors. I'm considering a tracked-tractor next year and I will certainly consider a Challenger; - hopefully I can get a demo. It all falls back to dealer support, and we have a few excellent AGCO dealers in my area.

Didn't Cat have trouble with their engines meeting Tier 3 or 4 a while back? Probably hurt the construction/trucking industry more than ag. I see the original track machines as CAT, the newer ones all "seem" Challenger to me - don't know why. To me, it just seems like there is a large distinction between them.

Cat didn't have trouble meeting emissions, they got out of the on road because most of the on road truck manufacturers are now making their own engines.
The Challenger tractors having a different engine other than Cat will only be a issue if the Sisu doesn't perform like it is supposed to. |

cat has way of a better reputation that that crap from AGCO, the only brand I think which is good out of agco is Fendt they made quality from day one all the other brands that are in with agco are in my opinion not as good as a john deere or fendt quality wise. don't get why they would go away from cat as their engines are build good and have a good reputation IMO.

One reason Agco is not using Cat is with the emissions on Cat engines the engine won't fit under the current hood on the MT700 tractors. Second reason is Agco is going SCR, Cat is going DPF, and Agco doesn't want two types of emissions.
Sisu has been around for many years, it's not something that has risen from nothing in the last 15 or 20 years. It is a darn good engine, good power, good fuel economy, good longevity. I have only had a couple of problems internally with these engines that was under 10,000 hours. Head gasket started leaking and the customer couldn't figure out where the coolant was going and kept running it, well you all know the rest of the story. Had one that got dusted, air intake hose was installed wrong, but in normal running I'm not sure how many hours they will go. Have several over 12,000 hours and still going. I still have my reservations about a V engine in the large track and artic tractors. Last edited by harsh; 01-04-2012 at 08:54 AM. |
