cotton stripper

I've decided to experiment with cotton and entertaining the thought of buying an older cotton stripper. Hiring someone is out of the question since cotton left this area in the 60's/70's and hasn't been back. I'm looking for opinions on what is/was the best cotton stripper of the early 80's models. I've looked at JD 484's, JD 7440's, IH 1400's, and AC 880's. I would like to hear from anyone who has experience with these machines.

Re: cotton stripper

ran AC 860 for a few years.fair machine seemed like something was always broke on it.bought 484 jd and never looked back.good solid old machine.have to put bats and brushes in but the 860 need more parts and down time.have not been around 7440 but it is probably an improved 484.seems like guys had some motor problems with 4 cylinder 880.not any 1400 around.quite a few of old machine sitting around here if you are interested.

Re: cotton stripper

Thanks for the info. You say a lot of old machines are in your area, where are you located?

Re: cotton stripper

Might also consider the JD 7445. Built in late '80's to early '90's, an improved 7440, plus most had the burr extractor (cleaner) factory-installed. The extractor will greatly increase your turn-out and grades, and the difference in $ between a '40 and '45 should be slight. I've run a 7440, 7445, 7450, 7455 (currently own a '03 model), and 7460, with seat time every year since 1985. Good, reliable machines, especially if cared for a little.

Re: cotton stripper

6059T engine in 7450, 6068T in 7455. The 7455 also has heavier frame rails and a diferent walkway around the cleaner. I was running finger heads, so there wasn't any difference in performance, but I'm sure 6 or more brush heads would be a different story. Tom

Re: cotton stripper

how did the finger header work?ran one on an old allis 860.worked alright in short cotton but a nightmare in tall cotton.also had some bark issues in the taller cotton.maybe the new headers are better?

Re: cotton stripper

7445 is a good dry land machine, If you have high yielding irrigated or want to run any more than about 4 row units you will want to go with a 7455. The 7450's had a lot of problems with the larger headers. If you are still looking for a machine I have a really clean 55 for sale in the Lubbock, texas area, and I know of a good 5 row 50 for sale here too. If you are in the south texas area, Austin ish, there is a good clean 55 for sale.
