bought 4840 that needs engine work it runs but pto rattles when runnin at idle unhooked from tranney ran quite noise must be in back end this tracter had sat for few years any ideas thanks
JD or MF? Load or no load? Took the bearings out of a 4020 PTO with power shift once... pretty much sounded like a rock crusher operating under your feet.
don't think its comin from up front as we had disconnected u joint on back of tranny an it ran smooth mite have to hook it up to grain cart an put it under load
I finally got the password thing figured out I will be the first to admit I am stupid about such things.
The pto gears do make noise with no load and at 1000 engine rpms . Have you ever listened to the transmission gears when you shut off the engine lots of rattling gears. The PTO should quiet down with speed and load. The first time I put a inline six in a 4880 at 800 RPM's the transmission rattled until we bumped the RPM"s to 1000 like a 903. Make sure there is no metal in the rear end. good luck
