Default 3176 CAT engine

How are these engines? Found a semi tractor unit that has this engine. I would use it for farm hauling grain from combine, hauling to elevator (approx 40 mile trip) and hooked to sprayer water trailer. Semi has a 13 spd tranny.

I had a t600 kenworth with a 3176 cat, ran it for 4 years no problems, started good in cold weather, Scott.

It's a fuel miser, if it's one of the first ones in production (I forget what year they came out) then you have to watch for the spacer between the engine block and head because it was made out of aluminum and in extreme temp changes it would start to leak. Later production engines didn't have this spacer anymore and then it wasn't a problem any more. It's a real good engine.

What year is considered "late". This is in a 1995 Peterbilt truck. Enough power to pull tandem or tridem grain trailer? Or should just keep looking and spend the extra $$$ for a 3406 engine.

We have one in our tandem with ten speed. it is bullit proof. neighbour has one in his hwy tractor with 13 spd, he pulls a tandem trailer, it seems ok for power. Maybe a little weak if you have alot of hills. If all you are running is 40 mile trips you will be fine.

i would stay as far away from a 3176 as possible. i know a used truck dealer that wont bring in a truck with that engine no matter what. Cat dealer even said they were bad as they have an aluminum centre deck. get a 3406 or if you want that size engine get a m11 cummins...just my opinion.......Edit..i didnt realize newer engines didnt have aluminum centre deck...still wouldnt buy one though
