Question Drone Yard Security

Been thinking with the amount of farmyard thefts that it may be worth looking into some security options. Keep pondering the idea of an autonomous drone that handles security video. I mean if someone shows up in the yard, it takes off gets video of them, their vehicle, license etc. and kind of hovers there. I think it would deter theft quite a bit in the rural areas.

Has anyone looked into something like this and found results? I've seen a couple companies that offer services where they supply the gear and you pay them for monitoring, etc. but is cost prohibitive. I'm thinking along the lines of a setup a guy can buy for 5k or so, and off to the races you go.

That's a good idea it would beat cameras that you have to hide and hope they drive by

Haven't heard of any off-the-shelf autonomous quadcopters for surveillance on the market. I don't think it'd be very economical or that useful, honestly. Plus you live in windy country where even light, full-scale, aircraft can't fly some days. And unless you had a small fleet that were rotating through a charging station, you couldn't get more than 20-40 minutes of flight time.

Cameras are likely your best bet. There are lots of cheap digital video recorders available these days, many of which are controllable from your phone. I saw one unit online for $200 for a 4-channel system. Cameras aren't that expensive either. Might cost $1000-$2000 for a complete setup, but that's still cheaper than your drone would be.

Maybe a FlyLine is more practical and all that you need.

FlyLine cable cam system for aerial video shots using DJI Ronin or Freefly MoVi

Stubby shot gun with rock salt mounted on the drone? The only question would be if the drone could balance the recoil while video'ing the effects!
