Default Counter vs co-rotation concave comments

Some of my observations and thoughts, having worked on stationary concaves, as well as both, counter and co-rotational combines, including test units at Kansas State, Whitey and the development of the XBR2 Bi-Rotor.
Co- rotation concaves and/or separation areas will be adopted more in the future because of their overall enhancement in separation.
Co-rotation provides 360 degrees of separation. (This is also a feature associated with counter rotation concaves). Either way, there is no opportunity for material build up on the top, as is the case with stationary housings.
Impact damage can be reduced with co-rotation, while centrifugal force can be increased with greater crop mat velocity.
Gradually increasing rotary cage speed, results in the grate / slots moving along in the direction of mat travel direction, effectively creating the effect of elongated grate opening.
Along with corresponding increases in concave speed, the exterior transport vanes effectively "feed forward" creating the same result as dynamic vane angles. This is similar to the on the go vane angle adjustment now offered with the JD variable stream rotor / housing.
Having run the Torum some last summer June 2011, there are many nice features on it. Feeder impeller needs improvement for NA crops.
IMO - The slow 7 RPM counter rotating concave provided appropriate "test configuration" data, but will give way to the benefits of co-rotation at the appropriate introduction time.

I'll be watching for it.
Do you have a horsepower per ton comparison to the fixed, non rotating apparatus concept?

I asked some experienced combine designers about it. They figure the biggest benefit is that the concaves stay more clean and so you have more effective separating area. I did some rough calculations and the gain in centrifical separation force is negligible for the co-rotation design.

Should have some answers this week on the Versatile Combine from San Antonio. Dealer meeting, kickoff of new products. Versatile did say it will have a Cummins engine.

Timing would sure seem to be about right. The combine was scheduled to be introduced to dealers last night with more info today, not quite a straight shot to GI but close.

I am sure looking forward to hearing about that new Versatile combine, and see the final specs. Is the dealer meeting only for the new combines, or are they introducing new tractors (thinking of a larger 4WD than the 550, and possibly Tier 4i MFWD tractors).
