Default 4wd manual transmission problems exaggerated?

Talked with a mechanic at a dealership that has had over 300 newer series versatiles sold and he said he has seen one manual transmission failure. The main shaft seized and caused the problem. Didn't know what percentage of tractors were manual or powershift but said most were manual.
Did get a chance to drive a 485 with cat powershift and man was it smooth and quiet. Definitely the most impressive powershift I have ever operated.

I have been told my a guy who worked for case ih and now new holland that the case 9390 and the new holland 9884 both where at the horsepower limit for that transmission. He said the sycro s could not handle the power and it would kick out of gear eventually leading to transmission faliure in some units

Well there have been several failures but I think it may have been due to quality control at the gear hardeners, they use the exact same transmission all the way up to the 535. Ours seems good right now, I had to bypass the oil cooler because it failed but pulling the scraper it doesn't get over a 150f.

Purchased a 9882 that had had work done to it at 3300 hrs. Felt confident things were good to go. I ran it one season and it had a pretty good vibration at certain speeds. Took it to my dealer and they ended up replacing another shaft and things were smooth after that. I have also hear the higher hp models gave more problems than the others. This was on a 98 model.

On the Case-IH tractors, I believe the highest HP model with the manual transmission, (425?) the torque curve is changed so you do not burn up the transmission. So, when lugging it will fall on its face where as the powershift will not.

I am pretty sure the red 9200/9300 tractors have a different transmission (different supplier) than the blue counterparts. I think the versatile transmission has been around for a long time in the same basic configuration.

I bought a 976 and it turned out great. The trans. wouldnt last for more than a week! And when it would break it would really trash itself and require weeks to repair. The reason it was great was because I bought a john deere warrenty with it. So I farmed with a series of new or nearly new John Deere tractors. Man that 8870 sure would suck fuel! So when the warrenty ran out I traded for an 1150 and never had the slightest problem for years.
