Both are good machines. We just bought a 1688 about a month ago and we were looking at the same thing you are. After researching and looking around, the 1688 was a way better choice. The 1688 has way more power and you can run a 30 foot header no problem. The 1688 is slowed down a lot more compared to 1680. I've heard some problem about the 1680's engine when they first switched the cummins in that combine. If you do buy a 1680, find a 91-92 year model, simply because of more power. The early models with the dt466 have 208 horse power and the 1680's with the cummins have 230. The 1688 has 260hp.

What are the areas to look at on these machines for problems? I am considering a 1680 or 8570 MF. Any thoughts or pointers would be helpful as I know nothing about either.
Thanks.

At what point would you turn away from a machine from a hours stand point? I know they are a simple machine to work on and operate.

I used to have a 1680 with IH 466 it definitly lacked power, needed lots of compressed air every morning to clean rads engine comparrtment, and air filter. Needed to keep water sprayer full to put out fires. It was a happy day when that left the farm. TR99 was twice the machine.

Are the TR's anything like the CaseIh? I know they are twin rotor
But that's all I know about them. Case is pretty simple & so is MF
Newer machines. MF is probably the simplest of all but they are more
expensive than Case & NH

case i would say more simple simple to fix endless parts for case the nh are twin rotor the biggest thing between the nh and case is with a case you have augers under the roror carrying the grain chaff to the seives where a nh its a shaker shoe under the rotor so sorts the light stuff to the top grain to the bottom and then onto the seive i would say more moving parts on a nh but i cant say for shure we have run case 2188s for 7 years and love them last year we traded one for a case 9120 yes the big one but we still like the 21 one well made combine

Get an AFX rotor. They are 10 times better than the specialty. There is less slugging so you can push you machine harder. Make sure if your at the dealer have them check the hydro shaft right off the engine. Many off them are wore. We just got our 1688 and has 5700 engine hours and looks like a hek of a machine. I can't to get her in the field and try her out!
