2166 vs 1680/1480 capacity?

Look'n to up grade to something a little newer. Currently have my early 1480 (DT436). Salesmen is telling he has a nice 2166 and that's closer to a 1680 capacity wise and more than my old 1480. Does this sound about right? Using it in small grains only.

A 2166 has a 8.3L 215 hp engine, 180 bus hopper capacity vs 210 hp of the 1480 and 1680 with the 466 engine (235hp in the 8.3L in 89 year and up). Hopper capacity I think was around 200 bushels in a the 80 series as well. So in that way they are all very similar. But the capacity on a 1680 vs 1480 was roughly 25% difference, based on increased threshing size, larger sieve area, separating area etc. Sieve size increased again in the 66/88 series adding more capacity. Addition of cross flow fan to handle larger sieve also really helped with capacity. So yeah I agree that the 2166 will have just as much or more capacity as 1680, considerably more than 1480. Maybe a bit under powered though, we had a 1666 back in day along side a 1688 and it was a world of difference in tough grain, turning up the pump solved that problem in a hurry. 2166 cab is worth the upgrade IMO, makes sitting in there a lot easier.

If you get any combine get one with long sieve and cross flow fan. 1688 has 260hp and better hyds than 1680. Also aftermarket rotor is well worth it. 3 strand feeder chain feeds way better than 2 strand (I like plastic chain, way lighter). 66/88 way nicer cab controls, I like reel adjustments on hydro lever. Happy shopping. I wouldn't look at a 66 myself way more demand for 88 but that being said you might get a good deal.p

You sure the sieve size increased from the long sieve 60/80 to the 66/88? I don't think it did. On the 2388 they reversed rotation of an auger for better distribution, had three adjustment segments on the chaffer and slowed down the shaking. But the chaffer and sieve are the same size on all long shoe machines.

The first 1680's had the same sieves as the 1480's. When they changed to the cummins engine they went to the longer sieves. If you really have an original 1480 with the 436 instead of the 466 then any of these combines will be an improvement as the 436 was way underpowered for that machine.

Agreed, I've owned both 1480s with the 436 and the 466, and the ones with the 466 would eat the ones with a 436 for lunch. Is a 2166 really any cheaper then a 2188?

No i'm not sure, too many years ago. I found this site, not sure how accurate it is though.
