 Cat motor in a 660
« Thread Started on Jan 25, 2010, 6:13pm »

I am looking at a '03 660 and was wondering what people think of the Cat motor in it. I have had experience with most motors but not a Cat. This machine has 1744 engine hours on it. Everything looks good on it. There is only one small spot where i can see any stone damage and that is on the top of the rotor. Just for an example they dealership also has a '97 8780 on the lot with major stone damage (needs concave replaced) and 2469 engine hours on it. They want $9,000 more for the Massey. The Massey has a 20' White head and 6 row corn head with it and the Challenger has a 25 foot flex. Any other information (good and bad) is gladly appreciated. Thanks is advance

I don't know about that machine friend. Yea it seem like a nice machine however any stone damage to the rotor isn't a good thing such as it being out of balance. There may be more hidden problems with buying a machine that has had a rock ran through it. I would take a closer look at it. Ask the dealer if he would "guarentee" the unit. Or call the previous owner and see what happened. Could be nothing major but cover ur bases before a big investment on something that will sit 10 mths out of the year.

Yes they are both at Dey's. They come out today to look at mine for a trade and we will see how far apart we are as far as the money goes

What size machine are you trading? and out of curiosity who is the closest parts suppliers? Does Toromont cat stock parts for them?

I am trading in an 8920 White with 3 heads tracks and many parts. The closest Agco dealer is only about 1.5 miles away and they have been able to get parts for my challenger tractor no problem so far

We have ran a 660 for three years now, no problems with the engine except the hand primer on the fuel pump came loose and stripped the threads, went to Cat dealer and they had something like 50 of them in stock, (lots of those engines in industrial use) so that was nice. We are happy with the machine overall, wish it had self-leveling sieves though. The grain bin does not hold 300 bushels as advertised, more like 275 if heaped.

I believe that is a C9 in that machine and that is a great engine, they are used in almost all the big selling construction equipment like the D6 dozer and the 330E and newer track hoe, only thing to note on that engine is to keep engine oil changed because of the HUEI fuel system.

Also pay to see if the HUIE pupm has been changed out, the never stull pump is alot more reliable with bigger bearing areas.

That it is Don, Im a shocker at looking over what Iv typed, Got to love HEUI when it wount play lol 988F. The heui oil pump was a problem, they updated the bearing areas and that to fix them.

is there a way I can tell just by looking at the unit or is it internal in the motor? the dealer said that a CAT dealer had checked the motor over 2 years ago and updated the programs in it. I don't mind doing the wrench work on a motor. I have a guy full time in my shop and all he does is builds high performance motors. I grew up working on diesels and he is teaching me the machine part of redoing motors.

Thanks of all the information
