 8560 exhaust smoke
« Thread Started on Feb 5, 2010, 5:57pm »

1987 MF 8560 combine running loaded or not . Anything over 1500 engine RPM smokes like a locomotive. Been told its the nature of the beast. Any comments or possible cures. By the way engine is Cummins 5.9 w. CAV injection pump. Owned it for ten years smoked the whole time. Great machine otherwise.

Install a boost guage in intake manifold and measure boost pressure it should be about 1 psi of boost for every 10 hp e.i. 100 hp should make about 10 psi of boost pressure. Don't know if it has an intercooler but I have also seen intercooler cores get clogged up to where not enough air can flow thru them causing this same issue. How many hrs on engine? Have valves been adjusted, injectors tested? I would suspect a bad turbo, or pump timing We have set 5.9 engine up 300 hp burning clean under load

I should add injection pump was off once and is set to spec. I pull injectors every couple years roughly 400 hrs. and they are all black w. soot and need servicing. Engine has lots of power and only burns about 6 gal. per hour of fuel in a 30ft. swath .

Mine does not smoke, nor does the other 3 that run in my area. I have only had the combine 1 season, but have not noticed this problem.

I would need engine serial # to see how it is setup, then could pm you with the timing spec. Sometimes we have to advance timing due to wear in the front gear train, how many hours are on this engine??
p.s. the engine serial # should be 8 digits

It the engine turboed??? On my 9790 last fall same type of problem. What caused my problem was a broken hose clamp in the turbo lines. Was not getting enough air to the engine. Look at boost pressure to see if it is up to snuff.

thanks for the replies. engine is turbo intercooled. just wondering CAV pump kind of rare on a Cummins. thinking back older Perkins engines especially 354 turbos used CAV pumps and smoked like the dickens. anyone think that could be my cause.

Some early 5.9 engines had CAV pumps but should not trail smoke under load if everything is set up right e.i. timing, clean intercooler core, injectors and turbo. When injectors where pulled did they pop at the correct pressure? Stamped or etched into injector body are to #s the 4 digit # is last 4 of inj. part # and the 3 digit # is the bar at which inj. should pop at. Again please check timing as it is very important on this engine with a CAV pump
