Hi guys, can you help me with regard to the cylinder drive gearbox? I seem to have "lost" high speed. There is no drive when it does finally engage into high speed. However low still works fine!
It is not ideal when threshing Ryecorn (i think in the states you call it Rye) and needing 1000 rpm and only having 750 at the cylinder.
What can i expect to see in the gearbox if we open it up? How big a job is it to open?

Had one of these apart quite a few years back. There are 2 chains in there. Hopefully just a chain broke on you. It's either a double or triple #60 IIRC. Each chain is for it's related gear.

If that's all you got away lucky.
Remove the chain case tin cover.
Check the top casting make sure the chain didn't wrap around top sprocket and split it.
The secret to the chain case is GOOD quality chain.
Used to use MF germany made chain, no china crap for this.
Keep the chain as short as possible. Even if you have to use an offset link to get it together.
You need tube of silicone a new outer seal and a chain and have a new offset connector on hand.
Make sure to install a 45 degree street elbow in the oil fill pipe to raise the oil level about an inch higher.
Fill with 80w-90 or 85w-140 gear oil right up to the plug.

An offset link is so much weaker than normal links but appears you know that by the having a spare on hand.
Is there a risk of chain wrapping on a sprocket causing other damage?

Yes for sure there is a spring loaded sprocket in there for a tightener.
Experience has shown better off with an offset if necessary.
Too long and the chain will whip under load which is worse than having an offset.
Plus the oil level was never high enough and one of the chains in the box runs not in the oil.
About 30% of the time the chain will wrap on the top sprocket and bust the housing.
While he is inspecting the top casting, clean the pile of dirt off the chain case breather.
If he can find some good chain possibly John Deere might have some?
Some quality chain without the split type rollers is best.
There can be big load on that chain and occasionally the outer rollers would come unpeeled especially with a V8 under the hood.

In that same light, pickup table auger slip clutches are extremely aggressive now, I think having them too loose is much harder on them then “fiddle string tight” as my dad use to say.
Seems a too loose chain and those aggressive slipclutches under just the right (wrong) set of circumstances creates a resonate frequency that can break the chain.
See MacDon uses 80 chain there now, likely related.
Not like it takes much power to run that auger.

In my experience its not so much that the half links are weaker, but often if mixed brands are used between chain and connectors of either kind you will see problems. Most often these show up as allowing the chain pitches to spread and the links come off the inner rollers when too loose, or things were too tight to start with and it pops off the locking clip or shears the cotter pin. I've even seen where pins are different sizes as well, as in either fit loose or so tight you almost need to drive things into place. Either is not gonna take a lot of load before giving trouble.
Especially in high HP and speed drives, I make a point of using all matching.
And you get what you pay for when buying roller chain, especially the offshore stuff.

As for using larger than required, thinking there might be less maintenance as a single 80 will run longer under same load as a single 60.

Contracts are made to be broken, a handshake is the law of God.

Haha yea someone has to tidy them up.
Note i haven't been back to the combine yet as we have been busy with stock work
