Redekop Chopper Engineers

I have a Challenger 540C/9540 Massey with the Redekop chopper and my question is why do you place the swinging knives with the wings/paddles in the center 2' of the chopper as you do not need the center to throw the material as far as the outer ends & would probably save power/fuel? Could the center kicker knives be replaced with straight knives as long as it would stay in balance?

Wing blades were installed to create an increased airflow in the middle of the chopper rotor.
