Will "Crop Lifters" work on rice harvesting ?

Dear All:

We have been coming across a dilemma lately. We are currently harvesting rice that is down on the ground basically. Our Lexions 485s with 25' macdon drapper headers are having a hard time with so much garbage that they take since they need to cut really low on the ground.

Cutting rice really low on the ground is a waste of fuel and machine hours. We looked at the so called "crop lifters" but from what I 've gathered they were made specifically to minimize crop loss on lentils, peas, grain, etc. but not for rice.

We are looking for a solution that will lift the rice crop from the ground and make us lift the cutterbar a little higher so that we don't take on too much straws.

We looked at several brands: "Dutch Industries Crop Lifters, Schummacher, Flexxifinger, Gaterman, etc but we don't know if this is going to help reach our objective with regards to the rice we are currently harvesting.

Your help will be much appreciate it.

Rgrds

JJ

I'm long way from rice country, but I have used Dutch and Schummacher lifters. Neither will lift the straw a foot, but will get the straw off the ground and keep the knife out of the mud. Schummachers are a bit more fragile than the Dutch, but follow the ground better. Schummachers come off quick if you don't need them in the next field. Don't plan on sharp turns with any of them. I heard mixed reports with Flexfingers. Some liked them and some had a lot of breakage. Gaterman has been around for a long time and may have a better idea of what works than the others.

Standard spacing around here is 1 foot apart, and the first one 1 1/2 foot in from the divider. If the first one is too close to the divider, straw that the divider runs over can't bend enough for the lifter to get it up and the straw pushes ahead of the knife.

we used crop lifters last season, they worked fantastically. because of the wet year the crops were on a lean, and they lifted the wheat fine, the ones we used were about 30 years old or older and my grandfather showed me how to use them and put them on.

the only problem was that the ground was so soft that sometime it lifted the whole plant out of the ground roots and all which meant that it got stuck on the cutter bar and sometimes having to hop out and pull it off. and also be careful on un-even ground like entering and leaving gullies because once the grip the header know its dug in and you want to be quick lifting hte comb up, and the obvious thing is as the travel along the ground they pick up anything there sticks and rocks ect.

i know nothing about the brands that you mentioned my grandfather couldn't remember the name, all i know were the ones we used were red and had the shows replaced once so far.

as i have never harvested rice before i can only give experience with wheat.
