Tines causing leaf loss is a misconception. We have a 946 and had a 945 before that with the impeller. When we switched from rubber roller to tines we were hesitant at first but now we prefer it. On a tine machine if you are losing leaves off the stem you have the hood set too aggressive. You can set the hood from barely doing anything to breaking alfalfa into 4 inch pieces.

The only downfall with an impeller we have found is that when you pull into mature reed canary that is 5 feet or taller it likes to wrap around the impeller and will bring a 200 hp tractor to its knees. We have tried everything but have learned to live with the fact 4 mph is the fastest you can go
