Header trailer import

Long story short I bought a custom built header trailer in Nebraska and drove down to bring it home. Took my wife with me on the pretence of taking her away for a short road trip and a couple of nights away from the kids until she figured out what I was really going there for. Anyhow the drive down and back north was interesting to say the least. Great scenery and very surprised at how many fields are still to be planted. Arriving at the border and an hour from home I was shocked to be told that I had to leave the trailer in the states until Iíd gotten the ok from transport Canada to allow the trailer in to Canada. Apparently if I had manufactured the trailer myself or it had been made by any trailer manufacturer it could be imported no problem. But being custom made by someone else itís not. Tried the but itís for farm use only comment only to get quoted various paragraphs from the border crossing bible then he called his supervisor who then admitted he wasnít up to speed on the new regulations and said it was transport Canada that needed to approve its import. Are these guys for real or on a power trip. There must be tons of home made header trailers and bale trailers in Canada but because I never welded it myself it canít be imported. Any advice on getting this thing home.

Lots of little rules and regulations when you are moving stuff across the boarder. Makes you wonder why some of them are there, but there is likely a good reason, safety would likely be the main reason in your case. Pretty sure if I built something, they would deem it unsafe and not allow it across!

A header trailer is not something that you put a licence plate on so it should have nothing to do Transport Canada. I brought a header trailer home last year with no problems but it had a serial number on it.
