Gars

Anyone involved in the GARS insurance program? Did it pay out or will it pay out in 2018?
These guys have been around for a while now, just wondering how it is working for farmers.

Many on here don’t like it, most don’t understand it. I bought for the first this year, and with the dry year and some hail had a large payout. Know many others that collected this year.

That's what I was wondering. If this years drought triggered any payouts.

I had a combination of the 2. Collected some from both. Gars has a program that you can compare insurance products. MNP also has a risk calculator you can run numbers through and see how they work together, alone etc, in different situations.

Have you had your premiums for this year quoted yet?

Like any insurance, premiums usually go up after a claim year. I dont use their insurance any more after my premiums jumped substantially. Because.
I was almost in a claim position

If its working for you that is great.

Was a garbage product when first introduced but theyve apparently made a lot of changes. Get them to quote you, use their numbers and see how many payouts youd have gotten over the past 5-10 years, depending on how much work you wanna do. Last time they quoted me in 2013 I did that and I wouldnt have had a payout if over six years of books so quit looking. Can say that since then, even with a bad drought last year, that this year MIGHT have been the first time wed gotten a payout but it maybe would have been enough to cover two years of premiums at most. But again, Ive been told that theyve improved a lot since then so who knows. Worth taking a meeting I guess.

In Alberta I find it nearly impossible to beat AFSC. For me its just a question as to whether I want to top up their coverage but I havent seen anything out of that sector that has come close to me even considering it. Have heard that the other provinces have pretty poor insurance products so I guess theres more interest out there. Which is a shame really, a govt subsidized product should easily beat the competition but I guess thats bureaucracy at work
