Montana boy, grew up with the Nelsons and have known all of them my whole life. They are some of the biggest farmers up here, but don't farm any ground bordering us. They are mostly further out east and north of our place. I have seen the video and they did a very good job on it.

2388h. You're a Waterville, Wa boy right? Have you seen the video a farmer did over in your neck of the woods? It's and awesome harvest video. Looks like the farmers' name says Nelson Farms on the side of the semi door. Here is a link to the youtube video. Do you know these people?

We plant spring peas. There are starting to be research trials with winter yellow and green peas that seem to be winter hardy enough.

Spring peas get planted at about 3 bushels per acre, give or take. Target plant population is 7 to 9 plants per square foot.

Thats a pretty good yield for peas!

What I saw happen in our peas was that as they grew, they got tangled into other rows. These 2 tangled rows would then grab (with their wiry tendrils) a third row. The third row gets pulled against the ground and then gets disease on the stems. Not sure how to deal with that problem. I will possible try to go to a 10 and 20 inch spacing. That would still give me an average row spacing of 15, but the two close rows would give the peas some support, and the wider part would make sure they can't grab a 3rd row. Might try it on some acres to see what happens.

They are excellent so far. Highest canola yield we've ever had, side by side with 7.5 inch in durum wheat, it was 2 or 3 bushels better (and almost 2% Protein higher) and I have yet to get to flax.

We will be sticking with the wide rows for next year. Just not sure what will happen with peas -not great in them!

Wow, that is a lot of equipment for seeding! I have seen that the wide row spacing is well used in your area. Just tried some this year to see how it goes. Looks good so far, but the proof will be in the bin.

I saw more Quadtracs on that trip than I have ever seen in my life! With the hills, I sure understand why!

What kind of machinery do you guys run? Did you have a lot of leaf disease pressure this year in your WW? Saw some fields in North central OR that looked like they were getting ripe because of the rust, but they weren't headed yet. It sounds like it even got worse after that.

Went for a holiday south of Spokane, stayed in Moscow, then drove to Palouse falls and stayed in Walla Walla. Went along the Gorge to Portland and then up to Seattle and came back along the 90. What kind of crop rotations are used in the hills on dryland? What kind of equipment is used for seeding? Saw lots of old steel track cats pulling rodweeders, and then some pretty crazy disc drills for no till. And the sprayers look pretty beefy to take the hills!

    Beautiful country!

I do not have a combine yet, but am seriously considering a solo operation. I found a job down in Dayton for this summer. They start a little earlier than the Plateau. I work in education so I am very hard pressed to harvest past Aug. 15th which is of course go time up there. But, I live in Cashmere so a job locally would be great. As I get to know some guys up there I hope to one day cut some wheat and help guys out. I know time gets short in a hurry, and I'd like to roll in and help, simple as that.

Thanks for the report. Looks like this spring is shaping up like last year. In your opinion, do you think a guy with a 1470 could find some work? Not solo, but to roll in with someone's current operation.
