Hard to start R-42 w/deutz

I have a 1994 R-42 with Deutz engine. Over time it has gotten hard to start if it sits overnight. It will start right away, but only runs for a few seconds, then dies. This will go on as many as 10 times until it finally stays running. Once it has run a while, it starts easily. But the next day you have to go thru this all over again. This occurs even in summertime. (Not temperature sensitive). Any thoughts on this? TIA.

Either short on compression or losing prime? Isn't the fuel above the engine, in which case poor compression?

I'll go with losing fuel prime. Try pumping the hand primer before you start it. On the compression side have you ever set the valve clearance on tappets. This on the V8's needs doing regularly
