1990 Cummins with 2875 hrs rear seal began leaking really bad. Have fully equipped shop, but never repaired a rear seal before. Is this asking for trouble to do it myself or just pay the dealership to do it? Thanks for any help!

not very hard, just pull the engine, and be sure to locktite the bolts holding the rear seal carrier to the block. Pretty sure they are loose now, thats where your leak is.

I've had 3 cummins out of 2388's this year, and I agree with trav, none of the 3 had the seal actually leaking, it was infact the plate, but I replaced the seal on all of them since I was in there, and definately loctite the bolts that retain the plate.
