I got a case-ih parts flyer offering this update kit, is this necessary? was this a weakness in these machines? any service bulletins on this problem? thanks

I would say they had some trouble with them. Our last 2388 was a 2000 model year and it had 3 new gear boxes put in it during the harvest of 04'-05'. One was a brand new one that went 15 hours. You want to talk about an expensive "upgrade"

It an expensive upgrade. If you make sure the rotor stops completly before you change gears the gearbox should last a long time.

we blew ours on our last 23 and the next day it went again so case warrantied the second one and gave us the heavy duty one also. We blew ours up in some tough beans.

Our low gear went out on a 99 model. Don't know when or how but surely from a plug. We found a burnt gearbox from similar machine from local salvage yard, Cook Tractor in Clinton MO. That was the best route for us for sure. Also, we knew our gearbox had a leak and when we pulled it, found it was coming from the dipstick tube that had a hole rubbed in it.
