740 Chip?

Looking at upgrading our one combine. I found a 740 CLAAS. I don't know much about CLAAS. They have low HP and it seems to me that low of HP running rotors + Cylinders might suck a ton of fuel and not accomplish a whole lot in 80 Bushel wheat and 50 bushel canola and so on? Has anybody chipped them to more HP? Is the 750 enough Hp? Or should a guy just look at 760+ same for the older ones. 580+ not bother smaller? I really like the idea of CLAAS but wondering what size a guy starts to look at or if you can chip smaller ones bigger and not see much of a difference? Thanks.

A 740 is not under powered, it will play with a 36ft in the crops you describe, superior fuel consumption to any other colour on the market. 740,750,580 all narrow body machines, 760 or 590 is wide body.

Not sure about that we put a 780 on it’s knees with 35’ in north east Sask.

Claas is arguably the most fuel efficient you will find .
Yeah if your in the NE like your handle suggests I'd really just find a wide body. We had a narrow for a short stint and our old 480 (wide body older series) would spank it.

Fuel efficient yes but not when it’s being run hard because of bigger crops and lower Hp is my concern.
Still fuel efficient when compared to anything else with equal throughput but you seem to know the answers for a combine you admit you know nothing about why ask the question ?

Yeah I doubt you would see much efficiency difference if a 740 was ran at capacity or a 760 was run at capacity. Typically when you overload throughput power use goes exponential or plugs so its self limiting and usually operator self correcting!

Narrow body have less sieve area and hp won’t be your limiting problem. In crops like canola it’s noticeable. That’s why the 740’s don’t hold there value well in western Canada
Yes a wide body ( 590 , 760 + ) will have more capacity and not knowing what you are comparing it to but if you get a 740 set up so you can use the engine at or near limit you will be very surprised . Capacity in small grains is also dependent on tm6 sieves and the amount of rotor covers etc .

We ran a 740TT for a number of years. It ran through some very good cereal crops.
We bought the chip for it when we bought the combine and never opened the box. Power was rarely the limiting factor. Fuel efficiency was excellent.
We have just upgraded to a wide body. We want to cover more acres a day.
Farm size, and ability to move grain off the field are things to consider. The 740 are great combines, if it is big enough for your operation I would strongly recommend one. As has already been mentioned, the fuel efficiency is excellent even at high work loads.

The Claas seems to be able to do more with 1 hp than others, especially in tough conditions. It is the combine design, and not necessarily the engine that allows this.

I have an early 740 with a C9 Cat and Steinbauer hp module. I don't use it as I don't feel the need for it in my conditions. It would be available to someone if they would like to use it.
