So here it is less than a week away from harvest and my dealer calls and says the mechanic will be there pretty quick to do a Hillco recall on the front wheel lug bolts. It was supposed to be a quick fix take 3 out at a time and replace with new bolts with a different type of washer on them. Well the first one we pulled was broken so that meant pulling the tires and we also found 3 more broken on that side. This is at 5 Friday afternoon and to add to it the threads were pulled on one of the bolts so he came back on Saturday (yesterday) with a kit to drill and put an insert in the one hole and a tap to run the rest of the holes. Finally got the one side together and on to the next side where there was only 1 broken bolt but still had to pull the tires and run all the threads. Got done about 5 yesterday afternoon what pain in the ass! Glad we did it but has anyone else had this recall and found similar issues. They also said to only go to 750 ft pounds instead of the original 1000. Maybe that was too much and stretching the bolts and causing them to break?

If that is the case, pun intended. I would consider a longer bolt with spacers. Torque them down and less likely to break. I found a number things I have done this with and fixed the problem. I guess it gives the bolt a bit more "spring" before it starts to break.

Not that I have a Hilllco. I have heard of case flagships with duels that the wheels start to crack and bolts breaking. I have broken a few bolts once on a lease combine that had the duels removed often for transport. Case makes spacers for the duals. They are blocks that go on the outside of the wheels, only spacers to use longer bolts, not make the wheels out further. I guess you can use them on regular wheels? Helps with wheels cracking and breaking bolts.

Was recently told this from a farm that put 1400 LSWs on an 8230. I guess Titan told them about it. So, I hope I relayed this info correctly. Titan had them torque to 1000ft/lbs. Sticker said 750 or something.

Washers was probably a bad description, the original setup had a 2 inch thick spacer for three of the bolts apiece. The new setup uses 2 concave washers, one thicker than the other, that mesh together as you tighten each bolt. The two equal the same 2 inch thickness. The three bolt washer it had is the same as the setup on my 7088 that has given no problems. I do understand the 9240 probably weighs 10 to 15 thousand pounds more.

No I didn’t take a picture of the 9240 beforehand so the first picture is of the 7088, which is what the bolt setup looked like on the 9240 before the recall.

Sounds like time well spent if it keeps you right-side-up in those hills!

I have personally seen a lot of bolts break from being over-torqued. If the bolt is torqued to max then when additional shock load is added then it has no option but to break. Just need initially tight enough to not work loose and not move around, good clean surfaces are important.

Could be some pretty catastrophic results in your country on a hill machine. Hope new mods prove to be better.
