On our case 9270 tractor it died all of a sudden last night. I have narrowed it down to being an electrical problem. The dash speed display and rpm will come on when you turn the key but then will turn off and you can hear the relays and circuit breakers start clicking. If u hold the key in the start position long enough the tractor will fire up and run for about 5 seconds then shut it's self off again.

Has anyone had a problem like this before? Where would a good place be to start looking for a short? Thanks in advance.

Start with checking grounds. That era of tractor is getting up there in age and eventually stuff starts to break down and corrode. Our 9270 has had all the ground cables replaced and terminals cleaned this last year because of "issues".

I'm not familiar either with the circuitry of your tractor but typically there should be at least one main relay to power up the cab and to send power to the starter solenoid. But it may or may not be the actual relay as a loose connection on ether the power or ground side would cause a very similar issue. So before you start changing relays, first try to trace along the wiring system and feel for any loose connections as you never know, it could turn out to be something a simple as that.

redgreen was faster then I typing ... and yes I should have mentioned that too, can't always take for granted that a connection is able to pass current through it just because its tight as corrosion can sneak in and its hidden until a connection is undone and then the truth is revealed.

Thanks guys. The mechanic was out on Saturday and spent 6 hours searching. Couldn't fined the problem. He took a short break and just decided to try start it again and it ran. Still don't know the actual cause. It ran for 25 hour then decided that was enough again. Dead. I wiggled the wiring harness up by the relays started again and ran. Done seeding so now I guess I'll keep looking for some sort of broken or worn wire up there.

have you ever drilled holes in metal in that wiring harness area to mount something. sometimes the spiral drill castings can get in between wires or under bundles of wires and cause intermittent shorts. happened to me twice. very hard to diagnose.

The clicking relays sounds like a low voltage condition at a relay. An example is a starter solenoid clicking when the battery is low. I would be looking for loose ground connections, bad connection at a wiring harness plug, connection to a relay base, or bad contact on a relay. Try swapping a few relays around assuming there are similar units in the panel. A shorted wire should blow a fuse, smoke a wire or cause a breaker to trip that should normally take a minute or two to reset. If it really is a "breaker" you hear clicking which would indicate a short then you will be able to feel with your finger which one is clicking, or a voltmeter check on the output side of each breaker will tell you which it is and so narrow down your system to investigate.

KSB from the info in your last post what you are saying is you wiggled the harness in the cab and it started working again, correct. In that case you have pretty much narrowed the problem down to the wiring and connections in the cab that are behind the fuse and relay panel. The next step is to pull whatever you have to off to get your hands and a test light in there and start probing connections and wiggling the harness and see what goes dead (get a wiring diagram from your dealer it will help) and then follow the problem back out of the cab if you have to. Good luck.
