We ran a 9650 Walker for many years with the shield removed. I did notice more dust and chaff coming out from behind the gear case. I crawled into the combine and installed some poly covers over the holes on each end of the shaft to cut down on the dust.
We had a similar experience had it break and let chaff in the shield that started a smolder. Stuffed a hose in there to put it out and got the chaff all wet. Started the combine the next day and I thought the cab was going to shake off the machine. Turned out the shield was now heavy and wet and wobbling on the shaft. We replaced ours, is there a possibility that crop could get wrapped around it without the shield?
