9650 won't move in reverse......

5935 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Potratzwes
I have a friend who just purchased a 9650STS this year and while doing corn was rained out. Got back in it after a few days in the shed and it would not back up in 2 wheel but in 4 wheel, it would . Had dealer out, diagnosed bad hyro, Installed motor an pump,SAME thing. Reman unit must be bad, Replace and same thing. Dealer and mechanic stumped. Any ideas as to what could be happening??? He took off to finsh corn in 4 whl drive but would like to fix it.

Sounds like a pressure relief valve on the motor to me...the rear wheel motors move it in reverse while the main goes over relief.

Try swappin the valves front to rear and see if the problem follows
Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

better check the 4wd solenoid valve also
Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

The relief valve's were the first thing they ck'd and swappped also.Did not change or remedy the problem. Dealer has sent info up to JD to see if they can figure it out. Thanks for the reply.Anyone have another idea??4wd drive solenoid doesn't seem to be the problem either.
Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

well then the cam lobe motors must be the culprit, are they single speed or 2 speed 4wd motors?
Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

Does the machine take alot of hydro to move it forward without 4wd? Check the swash plate...the pin may be falling out of the joint. When this happens it wont allow the machine to go in reverse but it will go forward....slowly(only a few mph in both 2nd and 3rd high idle). Its the part that the end of the hydro cable attaches to if you dont know what i mean...its held in by 6 bolts or so, take care when you take it off, theres about a gallon of oil behind it....

Just got back online, Internet down all night. Thanks for the replies. I'll pass them on to him and see if he can check these out. Thanks again.
Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

thanks to bubbaleroy for posting my problem. i have now registered so i can respond myself. the latest from my dealer is they want to replace the hyd motor on the transmission. it was replaced when they replaced the hydro pump. everything was replaced on top with a jd reman unit. when they got through the problem was identical to before. it seems to me very unlikely to have the exact same problem. i finished harvesting my corn by running in four wheel high (yes it is a 2 speed) .everything works normaly as long as 4wd is locked in and i know the big wheels are pulling because we got in some muddy places before we got through. the strange thing is when in 2 wheel drive changing fields, when i first got going the combine would run about 20 mph. after pulling back on the hydro lever to slow down or stop the top speed would be 9 mph. after some experimenting with the 4wd low button i found that when it is engaged top speed (also in third gear) is 9 mph. the weird thing is the 4wd low button had not been touched. when it does this i can stop, engage 4wd then take off again and top speed will be 20 mph again until i slow back down again. then it starts all over again. does anybody think like me and suspect the 4wd solenoid valve. my dealer suposidly by-passed it and said he didnt think it was the problem. one more thing i forgot, when this thing does this the hydro charge light comes on and the mech. gauge confirms this. also when in 2wd the combine will move ahead normaly but will try to start moving backward and then stop after moving a couple of feet then hydro charge light comes on. thanks for any help

Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

i read my response and near the end of my post i made it sound like like it starts moving backward on its own. this is not so. it moves ahead normaly in 2wd and then when you pull back on the hydro lever is when it starts to move in reverse, stops and hydro charge light comes on
Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

LUCKY, Have you got your problem fixed yet? I thought since it had rained, you may have had time to fix it.
Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

Did the dealer check the shuttle valve next to the relief valves? I had one just do the same thing, found that the shuttle valve on the motor has debris in it and was stuck. This was on a 9500, but is the same type of operation.
Re: 9650 WON'T MOVE IN REVERSE......

Just drive forward no time to be going back

Lucky,
Have you made any progress with your problem?? Has Deere come up with a solution yet?
I have not heard anything lately.
We have a 9650 with the exact same problem you had. Wondering how you solved your problem.
