Hello all,

I've had my CDL-A for a long time, but have never been on the road for as long as is required for working on a harvest crew. If I were to go next year, my DOT medical card would expire the end of July- what are my options? I've heard several conflicting reports.

Can I just renew it prior to leaving for the run, even though it would not be near expiration then?

Can I renew somewhere along the way, even though I'd be out of my home state?

Someone said that custom cutters don't even need medical cards?

Many people try to fly under the radar that farms don't need cdl or med card but when you do things for hire it becomes a necessity. I would think you should be able to renew early. Most don't try to because they want to get there money worth.

We got stopped at a roadside check in SD a couple years back, they were just checking permits, knew we were commercial. They asked to see my license and I asked if they wanted my medical card to. He looked at it since I had it but told me it was not required. I have always kept mine up to date though, just in case. Also it shouldn't matter what state your in for that, should be able to get it done anywhere.
