Ok, so I have already picked out our early beans to plant for this year, but I'm not so sure on what to try this year after wheat. The past two years we have planted a pioneer 95Y70 and a Progeny P5711RY behind wheat which were both recommend to us as good choices. Both were planted anywhere form mid June to late June. Both years these beans yielded in the low 30bu per acer.

Now each year I like to get online and look at local Test Plot yields for the previous year to see what they did. This year I found something interesting. For Beans planted after wheat, the same 5.7 beans I planted, yielded low too, however 5.2 to 5.4 beans yielded very high planted in mid to late June. So this leaves me wounding if I should try something in the 5.2 to 5.4 range after wheat this time. I also been looking at a 5.6 Asgrow seed that did well around here in the latter maturity groups.

Of course I seen similar things in the early bean groups as well. We planted some 5.0 and 5.1 beans in mid May two years ago, and last year we planted a 4.9 in early May and had much better yield than two years ago, 10 to 15bu per acer more. What I seen in the Test Plot data was similar with the pre 5.0 beans doing the best and the 4.6 range doing very well planted anywhere form early May to Late May and even some planted in mid June yielding High.

All this Maturity Group stuff always leaves me confused. I talked to one Farmer last year that told me he only planted 5.7 beans from April to July and it didn't seem to matter to him and was happy with his yields. I do all this research hoping to make a choice that will increase my yield somehow, and then talk to someone like that, and it leaves you wondering just how much all this Maturity Group Data means.

Thoughts?

Just for ****s and giggles, try some of our northern 00 and 000 group beans!

Well, I don't think I'll take it to that extreme. I mean I know you can't just use anything anywhere, but within whats expectable for our area from say a 4.2 to 5.7, it sometimes don't seem to make much of a difference. Maybe it just depends on the year, and weather and all to really show the difference. I'm no expert, thus why I'm bringing it up.

For discussion sake, you mention yields in the low 30's. What is holding the yields back? I would have thought you'd be able to get higher yields. We are getting 25-40 bu/ac here with our short season beans.

As you mention, while variety selection plays a role, it's what Ma Nature gives us to work with that has the biggest impact. I guess plant a few different maturities and cross your fingers??

Why i'm getting 30bu per acer yields with late beans is why I'm bringing this up I recon. For example, Field I planted with 5.7 two years ago made 33bu per acer behind 40bu per acer wheat, same field last year with 4.9 beans made 51bu per acer and I didn't really change anything up with that field. Another field we did in 5.7 beans looking at my records here, made 19bu per acer beans behind 40u per acer wheat, same field planted 4.9 beans made 43bu per acer beans this past year. So I'm doing something wrong or the 5.7's just really are not working for me.

Well, I'm certainly not a soybean expert but it certainly looks like you need an earlier bean. Are the 5.7's making it to maturity? Or are they shutting down prematurely at the end of the season? Off-hand, I'd say do some trials with beans in the 4.5-5.0 range....

I'm not sure they are shutting down early or not. Our worst beans this past year was 25bu per acer planed behind 60bu per acer wheat, panted very late June, some 1st and 2nd of July with 5.7 bean. What we saw in the field in areas was good tall healthy looking bean stalks that had no pods on them. Go a few feet further and they were loaded. What does that sound like? That was the only field we seen that in.
