I am a custom harvester and run two 2388s, I need another combine to run with us this year and need a less expensive machine such as a '91-'92 1680, 1688, 2188.
I have run both Case IH and Gleaner throughout the years and have much experience with both, but I have never ran an older 16 series with a 23 I know the hp is larger in the 2388s along with some upgrades.
We harvest about 6500 acres of wheat 30-60 bushel, 1300 acres of barley 150-180 bushel, and corn 200+ bushels.
I'm just wondering who runs these different machines together, and which one would be the best choice to run with my combines.

The 1688 's can run with the 2388's , if they have been taken care of. The cab is not as nice but everything threshing wise is the same.

One advantage to 1680,1688, & 2188 is familiarity and parts interchange between the 23 series. I sincerely doubt you will see a large difference in the horsepower unless extreme condition are the norm.My 1688 is pretty stout but has been on it's knees a couple of times but not an everyday thing. Alot the same in 1680's from what i read. Of course the cab(bigger) and controls are much better in the 21/23 series.

How often is hp the limiting factor for your 2388's? For us HP is ususaly the limiting factor. A 2188 has more in common with the early 2388's biggest differance is 20 hp, 3spd rotor gearbox and hyd drive rotary screen. What year are your 2388's? 2388's went through many changes throughtout their production. 1688' are basically the same mechanically as a 2188, cab electrical and hyd are the main differances.

My combines are '99 models with thirty foot heads.
I have ran the 2188s and the 1688s, but never with my 2388s. It's been quite awhile since Iv'e ran the older machines, I know the 1688s and the 2188s are the same machine with a new and impoved cab, we sure enjoyed the newer cabs back in the ninties, but we had to have our vlot meter handy, because we had alot of electrical problems with them.
Anyways I was just wondering which do yall think would be the best combine for the money. The 2188s arn't much cheaper than a 23 now adays, kinda leaning towards a 1688 that's in good shape.

What was the hp on the 1688s? They do have the same cleaning capacity as the 23s don't they?

1688 have 260 hp same as 2188's. Shoe capacity is the same.
