I am a pretty small farmer. I have a full time job and just have 200 acres right now that I just do on evenings and weekends and need to replace my old 4400 combine. Take into consideration that I plan on keeping my next combine for several years to come and probably expand my acreage as well, with all of this said would I be better to buy a good 7720 for around 20k or just spend the extra money and buy a 9500 since I do plan on keeping it for several years. Any and all opinions appreciated.

Re: BEST BANG FOR BUCK 7720 OR 9500??

For the money I think you should buy a 8820 over both. They seem to cost the same as 7720 but have more capacity than the 9500.
Unless your hung up wanting to sit in the middle. The 9500 will cost more to begin with and maintenance in the future.
But the 9500 will be easier to trade off someday. I have heard the local dealer won't trade 7720's in anymore. Will trade decent 8820's.

I would go with a 9500 if operator comfort is anything. Its much nicer, quiet and you do sit in the middle. You can pick one up for around 30K around here.

15k for a nice 7720 II plus stick 5k into it and you will have a machine that will be as reliable or more than an earlier 9500 and will do just as much and for a lot of years. Around here they actually have gone up a bit in value. if you look carefully you should even be able to get one with factory 4wd for not much more than 20k or so. An 8820 is more capacity, but if you don't have the heads to keep it full you might have some damage issues in beans. a loot of 8820's that i have seen have have a lot of grain through them and are pretty tired although some nice ones still are out there too. due to higher production the chances of finding a nice 7720 are higher though.

Given those two choices, I would probably opt for the 9500. If the 7720 was extemely nice the decision would be tougher, but the 9500 is still my choice since you plan on growing your farming operation.

Get the 9500 even if you don't get bigger. No comparison in comfort which matters when you know the difference.

Go with the 9500. 7720's are good old combines but are a pain in the but to work on compared to a 9500.
