I don't put much stock in epd's or birth weights. It is funny how one guys 80 lbs calf can be another 120 lbs calf. I've got my bull purchases down to the suppliers, they will usually call when they think they may have a bull I'm looking for. Pretty much buying off of looks, genetics, and reputation. Bulls have to perform in servicing of cows, quality of calves, ease of keeping, temperament, and lbs put on calves or they get shipped out of here quickly.

Ask the farmer which mother hits a home run pretty consistently. Keep your pick list fairly broad because once the sale starts money will determine which one you get. Relax on the pedigree since some of the real popular breeding is popular for other reasons(like maybe somebody paid too much)

EPD's are the most manipulated over hyped set of numbers next to canola trial data. Go talk to some good cowmen and ask them about what you need in a good bull. I think feet, shoulders, length, depth of rib, and how his moms performance has been is a good start. Another thing is nuts, they should be at least 32 cm but 38 is better on yearlings, and there should be no twist in the scrotum.
