That figure for water usage in rice is actually heading down ...... depending upon where you farm & growing practices. In general, usage around this area is 10mgs/ha. Yes that’s 10,000,000 litres/ha. Sounds a lot of water ...... BUT ..... it produces over 12t/ha of paddy rice ....... eventually milled down to the real rate of 36,000 meals per hectare. Plus, 2mgs/ha of moisture stays in the ground to plant (no-till) a cereal crop immediately following the rice crop.Rice uses 10 to13 Ml/ha .Almond trees on sand at Boort use 17 to 21+ Ml/ha
I’ve been told by a good friend of mine who is an agro in one of the “nut crowds” their water usage on some places is well over 20mgs/ha.
I’m pretty sure I’d rather have more meals with rice in them than crunching through a bucket of nuts!
