After learning about Mac Don headers over the last week, I realized the first question is can my 9600 pick up a 25 or 30 ft Mac Don? So, I called Mac Don and the weight of a D65 is 5673 lbs, adapter included but not guage wheels. Mac Don does not recommend any of their headers on a 9600, just 9650 and higher. But, I looked into this forum and some threads talk about heavy lift cylinders are on a 9600 *if* it has planetary final drives. My questions are now:
(1) How do I tell if my 9600 has planetary final drives /and or heavy lift cylinders?
(2) If my 9600 has heavy duty lift cylinders etc, is that required to lift a 25 or 30 foot D60S (drapper only, not flex)?
(3) How are Mac Don's 25 and 30 foot drapers compared to an 8 row JD row head (weight compare)
(4) Do I need to upgrade my duals? I have 38" x 18" duals good ones, but the trend is the taller (42" ?)
Thanks in advance!

Wonder what that is all about, my uncle has been runnin a 36 ft macdon on his 91 model for years, no modifications that I know of, still got the original finals on it with around 4500 hrs, there is even another guy I know of running a 936d that weighs in at 68-6900 lbs on his, only concern I would have is straw distribution, my uncle is runnin a redicop mav on his and it does just fine

Just looked at deeres website, it says single reduction or planetary, curious how many diff options there was

I never ran it but I did pick up my 40ft D60 with my CTS2. It didn't complain about picking it up. I have seen lots of 36ft macdons on 9600 machines.

Lots of guys around here that ran 936D around here. I have yet to see a planetary style final on any 9600 in this area. I worked on plenty when I was at Deere dealer. We made it a practice of checking the bearing play in all those combines. Often had to adjust preload on bearings or rebearing. A few had failed. Keep an eye them, but it worked well. I run a 936D on my 9650 walker. I had to install the larger cylinders or it barley lifted the header. I had turned a number of combines up to max lift pressure to help lift the headers. Brother in law ran a 45ft honey bee on his 9600. I think 45ft. He added in a 3rd cylinder and it worked well. Again, lots of weight out there. If you need the extra length, it can easily be done. I think the 9600 uses same cylinder as 9650 walker. If the 9600 doesn't list the larger cylinders double check under the 9650 and compare some #s. If any one wants to try adding a 3rd cylinder, I have my 2 smaller cylinders still laying around. Sell them cheap.

I can tell you a 30' 972 MacDon weighs less than an 853 8 row JD head, I can tell on the combine when I go down the road. Have a 30' 1052 Case IH head (972 MacDon) and a 853 8 row JD all crop head that we use on a 2388. 8 row is definitely heavier. We have singles on that combine.

I wouldn't be worried about weight I've ran a 36' 960 with transport kit on my 9600 for 10 years 2700 sep. hrs no issues and no modifications I do have the big accumulator but I think cylinders are standard for western Canada combines. The only thing you may have issues with is if the 9600 wiring will work on the adapter I know someone who had a 9750 and couldn't run an older Jd930 head on it until he did some rewiring to get it to work. I don't have any experience with the newer Macdon adapters but on my m155 swather with d50 head if the knife speed sensor doesn't work the knife won't run fast enough to cut butter.:)

Its highly likely MacDon doesn't want to try to hook their head to the DAM system on your combine. Headsight sells kits that can make any pot sensor head work on DAM machines--I got one. Weight--a 30' platform on a 9600 is peanuts. People put 12r Cornheads that weigh close to 10K on them. As stated, you can always add a 3rd cylinder (go get one and the brackets off a junker), but you won't need it. You may need or want to add some weights on the rear tires...but probably not.

pretty sure there are NO issues with the older 960/962/972 headers (we ran a 25' 960 on our 9500 no issue and a 30' honey be on our 9610). have a 36' grain belt for our 9760 and the only thing that might be a little tricky is to a) make the wiring talk between a new D60 and 22 yr old 9600 and b) whether the D60 frame is compatible - starting on the 60 series john deere went from those 2 lugs on the top of the feed house that hooked into holes in the bottom of the header frame to a bracket that went both sides of the header beam to lift it. must be able to buy / make those brackets but would be an issue - I will have to look next time I am by it but I am almost certain on our 2010 honey bee that those holes are not there to lift it (?)

counter weight definitely would be nice (for road transport mostly.....) but wheel weights and choride about only option - at least on ours the chaff spreaders are hanging right over the axle, not much space to add weights.
