My new to me 9600 has a double spread hydraulic chaff spreader. What is the procedure when windrowing straw? Is it simply shut down or does it have to be removed, which doesnt look like a nice job. The guy who cut my grain last year spread the chaff so my bales didnt have all that nice of a feed value, oat straw. Thanks everyone for all your input. I learn something new every day!

On a 9600 JD, windrowing straw with the chopper rolled ahead, the tailboard is dropped so the chaff spreader does not fill with straw and spread the windrow. It is left running and the chaff is spread while the straw drops relatively unaffected by the wind from the chaff spreader. Depending on your baler pickup, most farmers make a set of bars that attach on each side of the straw discharge area to make the straw fall in a narrower windrow than the 65 inch wide body of the 9600 would normally do. If you can find a Redekop Chaff Saver and get rid of the chaff spreader......
