Charges laid in hay scam - The Western Producer

hehe I remember when there **** show operation hit town. It was a miracle that none of the workers got killed. Think all there leased equipment came from Taber Hesston, I would love to know if they ever seen a dime. Glad they nailed him

With all the dry weather in western Canada and many cattle producer being short of feed this guy will have a new crop of unsuspecting customer to prey on. Would be helpful for them to have a picture of these guys so they could see who to avoid. Not a lot of help on a phone call but maybe if he come to collect money for hay not delivered. Business names can be changed all to easy but that face stays the same.

hehe only one way to sell hay....CASH upfront
Exactly, thats how I always sell it if possible. And if not, then maybe let one load go and take a cheque, or if I feel really uncomfortable make them either have a bank draft for me if I am the one hauling or bring it along if they are picking it up. When I used to haul down south I was lucky enough I had enough regular customers, that if I couldn't get paid before the straps come off, maybe I had to back track 200 miles, but I would just take the load to someone else. More than once I didn't make it out of the guys yard when he realized I was serious about being paid before it was unloaded and suddenly producing payment wasn't a problem anymore when they saw I was about to leave with it. But those were the days when guys would flag you down on the hyway and would offer you cash on the spot if they could have it right now. The hay biz can a fickle thing for sure.

How you get into some loser like this Piggot to the tune of close to a million bucks is beyond me:eek:

This guy sounds like he would make the maggots barf when he is planted 6 feet under ! Forget hiring a lawyer to deal with this scumbag , the Hells Angels or the Indian Posse would get WAY better results and for probably alot less money !

A few years ago, a neighbour sold his land and somehow a trucker from the U.S, found out he had a bunch of hay to sell. The trucker just pulled into his yard outta the blue and offered to buy his hay. Pull out a wad of US money and bought each load for cash. He even used the neighbours tractor and loaded the bales himself. He paid cash for every load before he loaded it. He even bought a bunch of old broken bales. The trucker was paying fair prices and easy to work with. He went into the local coffee shop and asked around for any hay and got more buisness. I guess he trucked the bales to states and sold it to feed lots.

As for the Piggott outfit, I know someone who lost hay to him. Got paid at the start, but outta the blue stopped getting paid. He stopped selling to him, but still lost 1/2 dozen loads. I don't think he ever got his money. The RCMP were involved and they couldn't do anything.

I expect in some cases there is nothing in writing or at least no easy way of tracking the number of bales as its a he said/he said situation. I totally agree with the paying cash or paying with cheque that clears ahead of time etc.

Dad once had a dealing with a local farmer who wanted to bale up alfalfa we had and since its local and you know the guy you think all should go reasonably well. Not so in that case and dad had to tell him finally that he was going to small claims court and finally when the bluff was called he coughed up the money. So it wasn't because he didn't have the funds to pay, he was just a weasel that worked that way so if he could pull a fast one and have the hay grower throw up his hands in frustration, then he got free hay to feed his cattle. That only works for so long when you buy locally !. Obviously he never sold hay to that cattleman again as it wasn't worth the hassle.

hehehe I never seen such a **** show as the Piggott group. Think it was 2011-12 we were coming off a monster hay crop in 2010. Guys were pulling 4-5 bale an acre on dry land (once in 10 years it happens) So these guys came to town buying it standing. They brought a bunch of kids from the Maritimes, good kids but didn't know a baler from a combine. They would start haying a field, make 3 rounds, get a call from somebody else that there hay was ready and pick up and leave. They had 3 new disc binds and they spent more time running around then cutting. Also hehe disk binds don't work to good in non rolled land:38: So soon they spent more time broke down then running. They leased a bunch of trucks for there staff, 3 months later all of them were smashed up. After they got most of the hay baled up, the trucks started rolling in, all this hay was heading to the southern states. Our local scale was donated to the town after the elevator was tore down. They put more trucks over that scale that summer then the last 30 years. Once or twice they almost put one over the side. (broken wood is still there)

In the end all the hay growers got paid but we heard rumors that the trucking companys and all the leased machinery and trucks never were.
