Any body experience this? Can I get a new one and weld it back on? Pics below show where it just came off and went through the tin, narrowly missing the engine/wiring/pretty much everything. Never get that lucky again.;)

Looks like the mount(cast?) was partially cracked already and just let go! Never been anything foreign through this machine, never broke a chopper blade or knife....ever. Less than 200 hrs.

So can the remaining material be ground off and a new one welded on, or

TIA

I believe there was mention of this in a thread here, about one of the combines sold at the RB Saskatoon auction this spring. Otherwise i haven't. Good to be lucky sometimes!

If it is not out of balance, just leave it like that. If not, good luck, seems like a fun job
It is way out of balance! Threw the roto-screen belt off from vibration and driver stopped immediately. I found the chunk that came off about 100' away.

It is cast and a new one is not available, have to buy the whole chopper rotor. I guess we shall see what the welding shop says in the morning but I am not sure it would be a good idea to patch it like that???

Two hundred hours? Is it off warranty?

I wouldn't hesitate to weld it back on, if you make a larger weld make a pass around the opposite side to balance it out, also check to make sure you don't have any more cracking out, that is scary.

Off warranty.

Fixed and going now. Welding shop has a spare chopper rotor that they steal mounts from and they welded one of them on. They have done this before. Got to demo a New holland 9090 in the meantime.:)

We've not had good luck with our dealer (same dealer) push Case to warrant things. For example we've had three different combines have the main header lift valve start leaking internally just after warranty is off (clearly a design flaw in the block that affects so many combines, not just ours) but Case doesn't want to do anything, it appears. Though I've heard rumors new machines have a better valve block on them that won't crack or whatever was happening (rebuild kits didn't fix it).

Yea Torriem my feeder house leaks down as well. They replaced it but same thing again. Not major. Only leaks down a little overnight with header on and takes week to leak down without header on in shed. Think it might be a put up with it thing.

Could u see on the weld if it was poor penetration?
It was the cast piece that broke apart, part of it was still attached at the welds. You could see that it had been cracked for awhile and since this was day 1 of harvest that means last year. I am not sure what the "uptime" inspection entitles a guy to but there was no loaner to be had and other dealers are eager to demo so that seemed like a good time to do it.

Today 2 chopper blades broke off and then left side chopper bearing failed! I see that one of the bolts that hold the chopper bearing mounting plate is missing like last year. I don't think any part of those choppers is up to the task of what we are doing now. Borderline tough wheat today and lots of straw, did 90 acres with the machine that didn't break in slightly over 6 hours and fuel tank is in the red! Fuel bill is going to be off the charts this fall.:(

Oh yeah, took it back to yard to diagnose and now it's parked in front of my shop because it won't start....likely the starter failed! At least the service call tomorrow morning will be worth it.

Have the magna-cut chopper and had two rasp bars come off rotor, ( not tightened down from factory we think) and then took out both kicker bars, and went threw chopper and spreaders...

Damage was two chopper blades broken and broke a few knives, few dents in the back tin, very surprised that I never broke a few mounts off like you did, been fine last 100hrs

Very very impressed with the job this chopper and knives can do, even last night at 3am thought as a horse strait cutting green kochiA and canola, it makes a very good spread, but dam does it take some serious power...

We put up with ours too, as the auto height thing keeps it working just fine in the field. Ours sinks down fairly rapidly. With a heavy straight header on it, it will sink down in a minute or two. Then every once in a while, it won't leak down at all. A comparatively minor issue.

So out of curiosity what kinda of fuel usage/acre are you getting? !
Lets put it this way:

Last week it took 1 full tank of fuel to harvest 13000+ bushels of wheat.
Today on the similar amount of fuel we only managed 9500bu.
Same field, same wheat planted over 2days. All desiccated 2 weeks ago. Just terrible conditions! This with a 9760 and 35'head.

How much fuel does your 8230 take when it is down in the warning zone on gauge? I can only seem to get about 700 liters (185 US gallons), it's supposed to hold 1000 liters. So I suppose fuel use is about 2 gpa or 7.7 liters/acre yesterday. That's a ballpark figure but pretty close, and as Ben noted, humidity and sunshine changes things drastically.

I am going to dip the tank before I fill it though, could there be 300 liters in there??? Or are they lying about the size of the tank.
