I remember reading on one of these combine forums where the early cummins engines on the 1600 series combines had problems with the oil pump, and there was an improved oil pump released to fix the problem. My question is about a 1994 1688 combine. Would it have the improved oil pump, or should I replace the pump to prevent any future problems with the pump?

Generally speaking, oil pump failures are rare on these engines from the 1666/88s and on. The big problem was in 1660/80s that had the engines running at much higher RPM. I wouldn't worry on a 1688.
