Quote:we'd like to, but are tryign to figure out how much better the bullet rotor is. We run over 140,000 bushel of corn through our walker every year and it just seems like its getting to the point of major repair.

our 9600 has 2610engine hours and 1590sep hrs

Wow....Its hard to believe that its wore out at those hours. We just traded our 1997 2188 with 3128 hours for a 2005 8010 with 750 hours, and it wasn't wore out . We just wanted to upgrade. If a Deere is wore out at those hours than that doesn't say much for them.

As for the head thing.....We plant with a 12 row and used to harvest with a 8 row with no problems. We did this for 3-4 years after we bought the 1200 planter. We got a 12 row head now on the 8010 though, simply because any smaller on that size combine is a bit of a joke..........Also we don't have RTK we just drive straight.
....we can't afford RTK.....It would be nice though.....

As for the Rotor difference in the Green machines.....Can't help you all I see is red...J/K..
....Seriously last Green machine i ran was a 94 9600 on a harvest run.

That is a good exercise to go through. Great marketing tool and often an eye opener.
ebertfarms, I see you are only 19 which would help account for your "but to me, thats not farming" comment. The fact is ANYBODY will be more efficient and less fatigued using auto steering. "only one guy in our entire county has autosteer" Really? A traveler recently told me he thought there was more fields auto steered then not. And as soon as you figure out how to read the newspaper all day and farm let me know. I gotta buy a bigger newspaper!
You sound like you have a future in accounting (on the farm I mean). Nice to see some one this age have a passion for both.

Quote:big..i think you just have a grudge because of comments i've made concerning you.

From what the local deere dealer has told us we're looking at a hefty repair bill...they welded a bunch of stuff this summer so we can get by this year and bring it in this winter so they can start working on it. I know your probably thinking "save money and do it yourself"...the problem is we dont have a forklift, overhead crane, the specialty tools im sure you'd use 1 time if you did it yourself, etc. So we just pay the dealer we've done business with for the past 60years to do it for us, and they take care of us when we have problems.

The 19 thing, it seems like everyone thinks that someone who is younger than, lets say 25 has no clue what their doing. I love it personally, im not saying i know everything about farming...i know more than probably most my age do for spring/fall seasons, but as the business aspect goes i'm clueless which is why im still working full-time under my dad and not him working for me. he's teaching me a certain area every year, and in 5-6 years when he hands the farm over, i'll have a solid idea of what it takes to run an operation and the financial responsibility that goes along with it.

I'm not saying more farmers aren't switching over to autosteer either, but im dead serious that only one person in our county currently uses an autosteer device. There are alot of lightbars out there, i have one on order that will hopefully come in before tillage starts in 2 weeks. I understand that sub-inch accuracy is great, especially for larger operations because it saves alot more time and fuel (the king ranch for example)...but what does it mean at the end of the field? you got to plant 3 more rows of corn and saved $15 in diesel?

Maybe its because i am a young farmer and have more energy, but with fall tillage i'm out there until 3-4am slowly but surely making my 18' passes one at a time until the fields are done. I find it more peaceful to run that late at night, as soon as 8pm comes the phone calls finally seem to stop and its just the tractor, 3/4mile rows, and my ipod tearing up the earth. Sure i get out of the tractor to give me a bit of a wakeup of the frigid yet soothing air and relieve myself
but i dont mind.

I input average costs...with my labor, overlapping 4ft in the spring, and 2ft in the fall (the crumbler is 1.5ft shorter than the farthest disc leveler, so i know if it was next to the already tillaed ground its overlapped roughly 2ft. With the last tank of diesel we had filled at $2.40/gallon it came out to an annual savings of $677 and 8hrs of labor.

I'm not sure about seed cost, and we don't put any of our own chemicals on except for aztec in the spring when we plant.

No just the comments here about thats not farming.....
......Also we don't use RTK for anything......Lightbar only in the sprayer......We just do it the old fashioned way just drive straight......

Quote:Hmh. I'm 24 so i don't really count but autosteer dose not pay????? If you would buy the John Deere steering wheel style and put in the planter the combine and the fall tillage tractor that would
be about three thousand acres of use per year I'm guessing. That sounds like alot of acres and hours of use to me but what the f**k do I know I'm only 24.

I don't consider it not farming, because it is. Its nice if you can afford all the toys. RTK is nice and makes it easier, but it is expensive. If you have it great. Maybe I'll come up with a extra $30,000 or so for it one day.......lol...
.....But then I'll probably need another truck, or tractor, or something.....It never ends....

Oh deereman its not necessarily the age but the comment that was made about that its not farming....

Quote:Answer to original question,in our conditions here in canada, there is a big differance.early in the season when the grain is dry and the straw is not yet cured the conventional rotor slugs alot more than the bullet had them both.you really notice it in canola at night when you really want to keep going because it is too dry during the day.so i would certainly go with the bullet.
As for auto-steer,we have it in our tractors and don't want to be without it,removed it this fall and put them in our swathers to swath canola.i've nerver combined canola swath that were that uniform and straight.there were no hardly any piles in all of our 2000 acre of canola,we even had a rookie swather driver and he did a super job.autosteer helped concentrate more on reel position resulting in less piles and uniform swaths.
I think if you grew up on a farm and have driven the same combine for even 2 years there should be no reason to have the dealer put it through his shop every year and pay him to do it.we are 1st year sts owners and i know i can inspect that combine as good or better than any mechanic out there.if it comes to taking a drive, tranny or changing injectors, yes let them do it,but the inspection i can do myself. just my $0.02CAN

I agree with the rising cost of labor I can inspect my own combine. Been doing our own work for years. Even though we are a first year 8010 owner I can still inspect it as good as the dealer if not better. In some cases I 'm more particular. Our dealer in fact will sit down with you and go over the things you need to watch for and check. if it is a major repair or something in the middle of harvest that we don't have the time for then yes I will call them.

Also the combine is very important. Generally the older the more maintenance they require to keep them running efficiently. If it is not set right or poorly maintained it will cost you more than the repair costs. It cost you downtime...That is a big one.....It could cost you crop loss, added stress etc.....Not to mention that the same part and labor will probably cost more to fix in the field than in the shop in the winter.

It's probably because the 8010 had a couple of service calls during the day and the farmer was FORCED to work through the night.
I could combine wheat in the rain if I wanted to. The stepped rotor cage feed accelerator work better in tough conditions than IH's design.
I have quit many times ahead of neighbours cutting wheat, but by 10 pm, I have over 10 000 bu of wheat off for the day so no need to run in the dark.

Here we go.......I know for a fact that a Deere can't begin to touch a 8010......In fact we have a guy here that farms 15,000+ acres that ran them side by side for 3 years.....2003-2006.....You know what ?......He now has 3 8010's and no Deeres....Thing is his son really liked the Deere and wanted to work because he liked it, but when it came down to it they didn't compare............

To each their own....Buy what you like it's your money your spending.....Just the facts are the facts........

Quote:The only reason they have three of those is cause there cheaper than Deere's. We have a farmer around here who farms 20'000 acers and had afx 8010's 3 years ago i think 6 of them. They were cheaper thats why he got them. Now he has 9760's and 9860's.

Not saying price didn't play into the decision, but the facts are the facts. I seen them both in the field, and have talked to the owner and his operators. They both proved that the Deere can't keep up. In 200+ bupa corn with 12 row heads if he tried to keep up to the 8010 the Deere would start throwing corn out the back.

Just how much more are those Deere's???? If their that much it is a wonder anyone is buying them. The AFX 8010's are not cheap by any means. Our CIH salesman just sold 2 new AFX 8010's last week I believe. They have 4 stores and this one has sold 2 used and 2 new in the last 2 months. They have sold about 10 70/8010s in the last 6 months....maybe more. They have around 12 AFX 8010's out now. This is just this store. This may not be alot, but I think it is for this area.

The old Deere dealer keeps trying to get back in there, but he's got a long way to go. There service and parts can't compare to the CIH dealer. That was one reason. the big Deere dealer around here is the best salesman for Red Equipment......

Just something about a manufacturer that puts down the rotor for almost 30 years. Saying that they are junk. Then next thing you know they have one too....
.... Kinda shoots their credibility in the foot if you ask me.....
.....Maybe the old Deere's were not as good as they thought.....

Just my 2 cents though......
