Looking to buy a Gleaner for running fescue seed. Which model would be the best F, L, or M. I don't know the difference in these machines and if someone could explain and point me in the right direction I would appreciate it! Thanks!
In general, the F size is the smallest, the M size next, and the L size is the largest. M's have a 40 inch wide cylinder and the L a 48 inch cylinder. Headers for M's and L's interchange with each other. I'd recommend an L size as they are pretty affordable price to the size they are.
What kind of acreage we talking about, less than a hundred, a couple hundred or a couple thousand? What type of terrain, flat, rolling, or slope? What size header are you wanting to run? I would probably not even consider anything older than a 2 series, ie F2, M2, L2 at this stage of their life most of the "straight" ones got lots of wear on them for sure as they would be no newer than 1976.
I'm from the east and have never run fescue,,, but lets assume you would want to cut the acreage in 14 days or less,,, that comes out to 36 acres a day. A good days work for an F sized machine with a 15' head in my area,, an M or L is gonna give you more capacity for sure, I could run 50+ a day in beans with an L and a 15' head, depending on field sizes.
