my 9680 seems to "burn" antifreeze. The light usually comes on about once a year so i fill it back up to the level glass (not sure how much that takes maybe a gallon) but i can find where it is going. its not in the oil and doesnt appear to be leaking anywhere. I am assuming cracked head or bad head gasket. Just looking for somone who may have run into this.

I have a 9680 that did something similar once but it has stayed level after I refilled about .5 gallon.

Dad has a 9682 that leaks from the little hoses on the right(passenger) side of the engine. He says it leaks after the tractor is shut off. Figures the hoses are getting old and hard so when the engine cools it weeps a little bit.

If your cap is malfunctioning it can build too much pressure in the system and potentially seep out of hose connections or actually blow out a hose or the radiator. I think you can get rad caps tested to see if they are still in spec.

Place some die in coolant and run engine at operating temp for a few hours then use and ultraviolet light to locate die on engine surface. If the engine is leaking somewhere or pushing it out past the head gaskets then the die residue wil show up with the ultraviolet light

We had a 9480 that did the same exact thing. Couldn't ever find where the water went. Changed cap, hoses, clamps etc. Finally after many years and changes, engine seized up and had to do complete rebuild. Ended up leaking and burning in aftercooler and top of engine. That's why we didn't see it in oil. I think you can take the end of aftercooler off and see the antifreeze. Been a while so can't remember for sure. That's what it was for us anyway. Good luck.

I'm fairly certain you'll never find a leak that amounts to a gallon in a year. My advice: Check the coolant level more often than once a year.

Ok maybe I will have to look into that. The tractor is getting pretty old so it wouldnt be hard to believe that the cooler is starting to corroded through.

I'm not sure how checking the antifreeze more often will help. It will still be loosing the same amount i just will have to add a smaller amount more often.
I think the idea is so this doesn't happen.

I would shorten the oil change interval as well on any high hour engine, just in case a small amount of antifreeze is getting into the oil. Then look after the taxes once a year.

how often has the coolant been changed? filter changed? could it be starting to seep through a cavitated liner?

Gallon a year, if all hoses don't show any leakage, has to be a head gasket leaking, do a engine oil sample, Scott.

Where does a guy send the oil sample? I haven't noticed any change in the oil level. I have tried on a couple occasions to remove the oil plug and look for water but haven't found any. I was thinking a bad head gasket or cracked head as well was just hoping it was something else.

Any truck shop should be able to help you out, dealer I worked for, we were a Cummins dealer, had sample kits, pull oil out of dipstick tube is best, if oil cooler was leaking you normally get oil in antifreeze, keep me posted, Scott.
