I am not happy with my old 1985 GMC 6500. There is anti freeze leaking through the clutch housing. I think a frost plug is leaking at the back of the engine but I cant see for sure. The mechanic said he will probably have to remove the transmission to get at it. Anybody had a 366 give problems like this?
Don't feel too bad, I've heard of guy's having trouble as early as 20 years old. You've gotten 50% more out of yours. At least the parts bill should be reasonable, just need to find a mechanic to treat you right on labour.
Had frost plug behind flywheel rot out on my swather last summer. It happens, make sure to realy check good and make sure not coming from a head or head gasket.
I checked the intake manifold as well as I can..... that engine is pushed way back into the cab on those trucks. I couldn t see any anti freeze on top but the distributor is at the back top of the engine and it is really hard to see
I'd bet that if it is inside that much it would still bring the same price it did when it left the dealership, definitely worth fixing. Those transmissions aren't hard to pull, nice and light with decent room to work. A good mechanic can fix you up in less than a day.
Yes it is tight quarters back there, mite have to go under and look from back of transmission. Mite help to if u can pressurize rad to see where it's spraying out.
Unfortunately it can easily get away on a guy in changing the coolant often enough, not to say that is the culprit in this case but those pieces of equipment that don't get used that much tend to get set on the back burner when it comes to coolant. Definitely change all frost plugs back there but I guess that goes without saying and some fresh coolant.
Well like Northern Farmer said change all frost plugs back there, and probably a good idea to pull a plug from front of each side of block and get in there with a garden hose and wash all the rust and scale out of block.
Not that its a laughing matter but I've timed it like that as well, no sooner have I changed a fluid and then discover there was a problem which requires dumping all the coolant or oil and start all over again with new fluid.
we had a 366 in a 77 6500 gmc do this took some time to find it but only took the mechanic who did it like 4 hrs to fix
