I have a 89 R 50. This will be my second year running it. I really like the machine. I was scared of the duetz engine with all the bad stuff said about it. I got my butt chewed by the mechanic at the dealer for doubting the engine and he was serious. The motor takes a little more TLC with a daily cleaning, but sure is cheap running compared to our N5. I have nothing bad to say about them. It is easy to work on and does a superb job. I know a couple years newer and the cab got better and maybe some changes to the rotor design in which I believe that can be upgraded. What kind of machine are you use too.

We had a R60 with the older processor in it that we got second hand for a few years. The motor has been lifted in horsepower and it ran well beside the R72 in most crops. THere had been a lot of updates done to the 60 series over the N models and the 60 was a reliable machine. Even with the age of these machines now I would not be afraid to run one again although the 2 series are a lot nicer to service and operate plus they can handle green crops a lot better

The 89 will have a P1 processor which I believe is a better rotor, check your helicals, cylinder bars, check feed chains pull them uptight. Look above the tranny for wear holes get good accel rolls in her. 2 series definately nicer but the 70 will still kick tail. After familiurizing yourself dig around on here ask questions and hype her up a little. Stock 70 will still do everything your sts would

Nicely put wheaty75, we have an N7 just about the same machine, but yours has a bigger motor and a few more up dates. That 7 of ours will flat out eat the grain, and gets a preatty good sample. I know you will get a good sample after getting used to the machine, it's an easy machine to run and get the hang of, and I'm sure yours has got the return.

Good luck let us know if you need more info or help.

Hi
I have an R-70 s/n 11810 model 7071 (just before the 89+1/2) so it has the same concave as the N-7. I have owned this machine since 1997.
The engine now has 4100 hr. and might use a quart of oil every 3 days, great on fuel. We redid the fan on the engine about 5 yr ago (costly but works great now). I installed dual air cleaner systems i.e. one for each bank and then put a filter minder gauge in so the vacuum on the intake is no more than 5" of water, seems to run much more free with the low restriction and I can run a whole season without servicing the filters. Previously the single filter could plug up in 8 hours. I clean the engine fins out thoroughly before the harvest starts and then at about 100 hours I give it a touch up and then at the end of harvest (75 hr later it gets cleaned out again). The straw spreader works better than the ones on our R-72's.
Things I don't like about the R-70 are the low door on the cab i.e. I have to duck to enter the cab. (banged my head a couple times before I learned). The legroom in the cab is a bit congested by the brake pedals. The cab must have holes in it somewhere that allow mice in so I have to be careful where I leave it for the winter. The inspection door on the right side doesn't allow access to the oil filters from the outside so I had to modify it. The air-conditionner needs recharging every year, seems to have a slow leak. I installed an old safety filter on the outside of the cab where the air enters the cab and that made a big difference to the air inside the cab. I had to install extra lights and I put on a 150 amp Leece Neville alternator, this really improved the life of the electro magnetic clutches as the voltage doesn't drop like with the stock alternator. Also make sure the dust cover stays in place over the battery as the dust on the battery gets so dry it will start on fire, had 2 batteries burned up so far.
Take care
Neil
