Hello, everyone. I’ve been reading a lot about how destructive Richardson’s Ground Squirrels (a.k.a. “gophers”) are to the crops and farmlands of Alberta and Saskatchewan so I’d like to help reduce their numbers, even by just a little. However, I personally don’t know any farmers in Alberta with gopher problems so I’ve been trying to connect online with other like-minded people about this topic but it’s been a challenge to get anywhere with this. I’ve heard that randomly knocking on people’s doors to ask about shooting gophers on their property often works, but that sounds a bit weird to me (maybe that’s what living so long in the city does to you). I also would like to have things planned ahead of time and not leave things so much to chance especially if I have to drive out a fair distance. However, I’m told Albertan farmers are wonderful people so I’m going to just throw my request/offer out there for someone to get back to me.

Here’s a bit about myself. I’m 58 years old, my son is 18, and we live in BC. This spring or summer, we’ll be spending some time in Alberta visiting my wife’s family in Calgary and Edmonton. While we’re there, we’d like to take a couple of days shooting gophers as a father and son team with our rimfire rifles. We are both licensed, respectful, friendly, accurate shooters, and will not leave a mess. If you have a gopher problem, we’d love to help remove them with our rifles. I can be reached at [email protected] or by telephone at 604-230-8083 (voice or text).

My schedule is somewhat flexible so I’m willing to meet you at your needs. If we are given permission for this opportunity on your property, I will make sure you won’t regret having us over. Shooting gophers isn’t something we get to do here in BC so we envy Albertans for having this unique past time. I really hope someone will get back to me as this might be the last year I can do this with my son before his life takes on different interests and priorities (having COVID around really made this difficult to do these past 2 years). If you’ve read this far, thanks!

Thanks to all who viewed my post so far. Only one responded so I'll be heading off to SE Alberta in mid-May to answer the call. I know it's still early in the year to think about this so maybe a few more will respond later. My son and I are excited to finally plan this trip. We're still open to anyone who needs help. Just give me a ring.
