I guess the question applies mostly to single auger carts. With a drag auger I agree, keep it covered.
Single auger carts however, maybe open tarp, open chutes is best for tarp preservation?
Have a bourgault 750. Tarp isn't the best but tried the closed tarp closed bottom the first winter ... got pretty rusty inside. Since then its been open tarp, open slide, open bottom.

We have a drag auger. If we leave it open all the freeze thawing of the snow and ice would rot out things a lot quicker. For us we try to have a tarp as sealed as possible, open up all the bottom clean out doors, and keep the auger folded out so it does not fill with moisture. At the end of the season I fire hosed out all the rotten crap around the drag auger and sprayed it down with motor oil once it was dry. The oil spray helps keep the auger flighting and rest of the bare metal from rusting.
