I guess the question applies mostly to single auger carts. With a drag auger I agree, keep it covered.
Single auger carts however, maybe open tarp, open chutes is best for tarp preservation?
We have a drag auger. If we leave it open all the freeze thawing of the snow and ice would rot out things a lot quicker. For us we try to have a tarp as sealed as possible, open up all the bottom clean out doors, and keep the auger folded out so it does not fill with moisture. At the end of the season I fire hosed out all the rotten crap around the drag auger and sprayed it down with motor oil once it was dry. The oil spray helps keep the auger flighting and rest of the bare metal from rusting.
Trap open on the bottom. auger in the unloading position, tarp open. Tarps seem so weak now a days. mine is only a 1100 no conveyor or exposed bearings in the trough.
Leave ours open tarps don’t seem to handle the sun that great!
