Hey guys. We have a older great plains 3 section 30ft drill. We struggle finding the correct settings. We follow the method on the drill by turning the wheel the correct 3 of revs and weighing the seed. When we do this in the yard we get it spot on than you go out to the field and it seeds way higher like 20 -30% higher. We put new metering wheels in this spring hoping to fix this but still not right. Any thoughts. It has done it with both oats and wheat this year

field conditions and tire pressure can change the rate a lot. actually 20% isn't as far off as you think (overlap, point rows, etc all add up more than one would think, that is why section control is so popular on new). I can't remember if increasing tire pressure increases or decreases seeding rate, but you might try one and see if it goes the right way for you. Also, most of the drills have a rate plate on the handle that can be moved, you can move it to adjust for the difference. hope this helps and good luck.

you might also take a tube off the drill and catch the seed coming out when you drive the correct distance in the field and see how far off you are, takes time, but if you are 20% over on beans it would pay out quick!
