Ive got a 89 1660 and im running a 1020 17.5 head. Its got the poly slides on the bottom and the 3 inch cut case cutter bar. Im having problems with it wanting to dig in the ground at times like the automatic float stops working.and it likes to push the top layer of dirt instead of slide over it. Im always having to stop and back up. another thing it does is if you come to the top of a hill the head won't got down. It's like the floating system gets lost and don't know what to do. Then as soon as the head hits the ground again it starts floating again.

Been a bit for me in a 1660, but can't you fiddle with the sensitivity and response of the header? Also mine was acting goofy and had to replace the connecting plugs on the base unit and header, can't remember for sure but I think mine was "flopping" for lack of better term.

I agree adjust to be more sensitive only draw back is makes head a bit jumpy in uneven ground. Depending on your ground conditions just have to find your sweet spot.

This wouldn't have anything to do with the head not floating right at the top of a hill but early beans tend to drag more than they will in a few more weeks ! Has this head been used successfully in the past on this combine?
Yeah it worked fine last year.
This year im having to hit the down button all the time. Everything is moving freely as far as the sensor and the bar that goes across the bottom. One other thing I forgot to mention. In the past all I had top do to lower the head all the way down was hit the down button for just a second and it would drop the rest of the way on it's own. This year I have to hold it down the whole way or it stops.

Are you sure the paddles on the bar are following tight to bars under the head have had them a little stuff in the beginning of the season and that's how it has acted. We have put a trap strap (bungee) on right side of head where the indacater rod is to help.

Check for small rocks just above one of the sensor paddles under the head. Also, on the far outside behind the wobblebox. Sounds to me like you have a sensor thinking it's on a high spot.
Just wondering if this is going to be my problem down the road when we start in the beans . I've got some weird problem with the return to cut right now it won't always work with changing headers . Works somewhat with the 1020 being a low number on the height meter but put the pickup header and with 30+ numbers and when you adjust the height knob to that height and you get the double arrow the header raises up a foot or more and adjusting the height knob down doesn't doo nothing .

Been some time since been in 16 series cab but I think you can adjust it in where the fuse are if I remember correctly. And I think some adjustment can be made useing the manual dial on console even in automatic.

Check the cable for being bound up yes. And also take the right side panel off to acess wires and check cor continuity between wires
