Been fighting then left side counter shaft pulleys all day I cannot move the pulley or shake it loose I am at my wits end with it any suggestions?

We usually always get away with say a 2x4 across one half of the pulley sheave and a pretty good blow with a sledge. The farther off axis the better but you have to use your brain don't go and nail the outer edge of the pulley bare with a sledge as your bound to crack it. The off axis hit makes the wedges want to separate.

Put a pipe on the outside of it and give the pipe a few good hits with the sledge. They will loosen pretty quick with a few blows.

We've had bad ones that we tried with a pipe and beat on it senseless and I'm a big guy and no success. 2 blows off axis and its done.

Joesixpack do you usually reuse the taper rings or do you put new ones in?

Always reuse them.....unless you beat them up with that pipe! Really they're not consumable. Up here 590's were eating the bushings and into the pulley's with those 3 index pins yearly. Must have pulled all the variable speeds on both twice for sure and one 3 times. Finally went to over sized pins and bushings. It would be a non issue if they used a tighter clearance bronze bushing instead of those weak ass plastic ones in the sheaves.

At the summer clinic it was finally explained why the plastic bushings.
Ever since that brace bar has been used the plastic bushing were added to absorb the shock loads that became higher with the brace.
Something like that.

Huh??? What did they use before the plastic then? Paper?

REALLY! Someone tell me the 400 series uses a bronze bushings in the middle between the sheaves.....Cause I've never had one apart. They just don't fail. The 400's have the small plastic bushings on the three index pins.

It took a half an hour with an air hammer to knock em loose. I have never seen a set so stuck in my life but all is well and she is rolling again.
