We've had rain since last Sunday how long until the canola in the swath sprouts? It's been swathed for close to weeks.

I had some canola sitting in the swath for a month....
Machine / family trouble.
Only had a very small amount of sprouted seeds.

Cant recall exact weather during that time.... but last Fall was plagued with wet days.
Now it's the winter wheat's turn to lay in the swath for a couple weeks....

If it's rolled tight to the ground you will have more sprouts.

That's what I'm worried about always tramp it tight, never had this much rain on canola this early in the year it's always been later when we get the rain.

My thoughts exactly, if its rolled down too tight vs lightly patted down to form the swath that helps press the canola right to the ground and starts to mold and then sprout with prolonged wet. Also depends on how wide the swath is for the width of the swather header as a tight mass can't breath the same as a less dense swath or if the swath is bunchy vs a nice flow out of the swather. In the end you will only know when you go to combine it as to what the sample looks like and how ugly it looks under the swath. Having said that though, canola usually fairs much better then wheat and certainly better then sprouting barley in a swath.

you wont have any problems with sprouted canola. And if by chance some crazy thing happens and some does sprout the % allowed is very high at the elevator.

Um I've never even heard of sprouted canola being a problem. I've seen 2 years during my farming career where we had to dry every bushel of grain including canola and have never had an issue. In my mind the more rain you can get on canola swaths the better. Takes away any green issues. Which is a bigger issue to me

I never thought it could happen ether as we've had lots of rain on canola swaths since we get a lot of rainy Septembers but .... then one fall we really had an ugly long drizzly mess and canola that seemed to be so stuck down to the ground and that is where it started sprouting. I believe we still got number one for it but there certainly was a mess and a loss in the swath and some sprouts in the sample. Part of the problem was that it was always damp or dripping wet when we were swathing and the material was heavy and hit the ground in a tight sloppy mass right off the start.
