I have decided to help a neighbor out with a bit of wheat planting this year, and have a few question about high rate in furrow fertilizer. In our operation, we take soil samples, soil type and planting date into consideration we we decide on fertilizer rate and method of application. I visited with him today, and he just wants to go with the highest amount of 18-46-0 dry that I can put in furrow through the drill. I know that the salt burn with high rate of N in furrow and soil type are limiting factors, and explained this to him, but he only has 60 acres to drill, and wants to have a nice green cover for the winter and a decent yield next summer. I am only trying to help the guy out a bit and don't want a pissing contest with him over the practice that he is operating with. I guess my main question here is, roughly how much 18-46-0 is safe to run in furrow with wheat, that won't cause much burn or issue. The field in question is around mid 6 on ph and is a lighter soil with some red clay in the higher areas. Thanks for any insight:)

Sorry, I should have said that. I run a JD 455 35 foot drill on 7.5 inch spacing. The current topsoil moisture should be adequate for germination and fertilizer break down. The open furrow width in front of the press wheel is between 1.5 and 2 inches. Fifty pounds of product is about the highest I have ever run with this drill, with no problems at all. In the past, if more starter was needed, we would broadcast. Thanks

I was looking in the 60 to 70 range, but just wanted some opinions. This is a foreign way to farm to me, as I like to know what is in the soil an what is needed. I don't like to just put a number out and and run it. We use zone plotting and variable rate application as much as we can. Like I said before, just helping out a guy who wants a green field around his house. I guess I might be a little curious as to what guys have experienced with high rate in furrow.
